Wikipedia Offline

How would you like to have the world’s knowledge stored on your computer? This is possible and free. Wikipedia is one of the best online resource when you are looking for a description or information about a subject. What if you don’t have an internet connection and you would like to access Wikipedia and find information. You can download the entire Wikipedia database from their website. The database is a xml file and will need some kind of reader to parse it. One program that works really well is Wiki taxi, it will ask you to import the xml and you can start viewing the content right away.

There is also a solution for Android where you can save the database to your media card and use a program like Wikipedia offline reader ( not free ). I also found a link for a torrent that will have the Wikipedia database from May 2011 and Wikitaxi. The speed might be a lot faster using the torrent depending on how many seeders are available. The database is quite large ( 7.3 GB compressed, 31.0 GB uncompressed).
